Passport Photo Size: 35×45 mm vs 2×2 inch Explained

By FlowVid Team·Last updated June 14, 2026

Passport and visa photos come in two main sizes worldwide, and using the wrong one gets your application rejected. The two standards are 35×45 mm and 2×2 inch. Here's the difference and how to pick the right one.

35×45 mm — the international standard

35×45 mm (3.5×4.5 cm) is a portrait-orientation photo used by India and most of Europe, the UK, Australia and many other countries for passports and visas. At the 300 DPI usually required for print, that's about 413×531 pixels. Make one with the Passport Photo 35×45 mm tool.

2×2 inch — the US standard

2×2 inches (51×51 mm) is a square photo used for US passports and US visas, including the Diversity Visa lottery. At 300 DPI that's 600×600 pixels. Use the Passport Photo 2×2 inch tool to crop to the exact square.

Quick comparison

  • 35×45 mm (≈413×531 px): India, UK, EU, Australia, most countries
  • 2×2 inch (600×600 px): United States passports and visas
  • 35×45 mm is portrait; 2×2 inch is square

Always match your country's rules

Beyond dimensions, each authority has rules on background colour, head size and expression. Use the size your specific application asks for, and confirm the detailed photo guidelines on the official government page before submitting.
