Your thumbnail is the first thing viewers see, so it needs to be sharp and correctly sized. YouTube has a clear recommendation — here's the spec and how to hit it.
The correct size
YouTube recommends a thumbnail of 1280×720 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio, saved as JPG, PNG or WebP and kept under 2MB. Using the exact 1280×720 size means your thumbnail stays crisp and isn't awkwardly cropped on any device.
Make one in seconds
- Open our YouTube Thumbnail Resizer.
- Upload any image — it's cropped and resized to exactly 1280×720.
- Download it, ready to upload with your video.
If your thumbnail file is over the 2MB limit, run it through our Compress Image to 200KB tool first to shrink it without visible quality loss.
